What is a QR Code Reader?

A QR code reader (also called a QR barcode scanner) is an optical scanning device that decodes a printed or mobile-displayed QR code to verify identity or authorise access. Unlike a card-based RFID reader, a QR reader needs no physical credential — a visitor pass, employee ID, or parking ticket can be issued digitally through an app, email, or SMS and scanned directly at the entry point.

In a typical QR-based access control setup, a unique code is generated for a person or vehicle. At the gate, the Novus QR reader scans and decodes the code in under 200 milliseconds and passes the result to a connected standalone or network controller over Wiegand, RS232, or RS485 — which then releases the door, turnstile, flap barrier, or boom barrier.

Novus currently manufactures two QR reader models: the NS-R400-QM, a compact IC-card and QR/1D-code reader for standard indoor access points, and the NS-R405-QM, a rugged EM/Mifare-card and QR/PDF417/full-symbology reader built for outdoor gates and higher-volume visitor or ticketing deployments.

QR Reader Buying Guide for India

Key considerations before specifying a QR code reader for your access control project.

QR Reader vs RFID / Proximity Reader: Which Should You Choose?

An RFID or proximity reader authenticates a physical card or tag held near the device — well suited to long-term employee or resident credentials that don't change often. A QR code reader instead scans a printed or on-screen code, so passes can be issued and revoked digitally without printing or collecting a card.

For visitor management, event entry, or parking ticketing where credentials are short-lived, a QR reader is usually the better fit. For permanent staff or resident access, RFID/Mifare credentials remain the norm — which is why the NS-R405-QM supports both QR/barcode scanning and EM/Mifare card reading on a single device.

How to Choose the Right QR Reader for Access Control

Match the reader to where it will be mounted and how it will be used:

  • Indoor vs outdoor: the NS-R400-QM suits covered lobbies; the NS-R405-QM's -30°C to 70°C rating and tempered-glass build suit outdoor or semi-outdoor gates.
  • Credential mix: if some users will carry RFID/Mifare cards and others will use QR passes, choose the NS-R405-QM for its dual capability.
  • Communication protocol: confirm your existing controller supports Wiegand, RS232, RS485 or UART before finalising the reader.
  • Barcode formats: if you need PDF417 or full-symbology decoding for ticketing, the NS-R405-QM is the compatible choice.
Pro tip: For parking and ticketing deployments, pair a Novus QR reader with the NS-TD-1001 Ticket Dispenser and a boom barrier for a fully automated entry/exit flow.

Frequently Asked Questions

A QR code reader scans a printed or mobile-displayed QR code to verify a visitor's or employee's identity and trigger entry through a turnstile, flap barrier, boom barrier or door. It enables contactless, card-free access at gates, offices, residential societies and parking facilities.
A unique QR code is generated for a visitor, employee or vehicle via an app, email or ticket. At the entry point, the Novus QR reader scans and decodes the code, checks it against the access control database, and sends a signal over Wiegand, RS232 or RS485 to open the connected gate, turnstile or barrier.
An RFID or proximity reader authenticates a physical card or tag held near the device, while a QR reader optically scans a printed or on-screen code. QR readers suit visitor management and ticketing since passes can be issued digitally, while RFID readers suit long-term employee or resident credentials.
Yes. Both the NS-R400-QM and NS-R405-QM decode QR codes as well as common 1D barcode formats such as Code128, Code39, EAN-8, EAN-13 and UPC-A, and the NS-R405-QM additionally supports PDF417 and full symbology decoding.
The NS-R400-QM supports Wiegand, RS232 and RS485. The NS-R405-QM supports Wiegand, RS232, UART (TTL) and RS485, allowing both models to integrate directly with most standalone and network access controllers.
Yes. Novus QR readers decode the scanned code locally and pass the result to a connected controller over a wired protocol such as Wiegand or RS485, so the reader itself does not require internet access. Connectivity is only needed if the backend visitor management or attendance software is cloud-hosted.
Both the NS-R400-QM and NS-R405-QM read barcodes and QR codes from 0 to 20cm, with a decoding speed of under 200 milliseconds, and read RFID/IC cards from 3 to 6cm.
The NS-R405-QM is built with a metal frame and tempered glass panel and is rated for -30°C to 70°C operation with 10-90% humidity tolerance, making it suitable for outdoor and semi-outdoor gates. The NS-R400-QM is rated -20°C to 70°C and is best suited to covered or lobby-style entry points.
Yes. Novus QR readers integrate with parking management software, ticket dispensers, zonal control units and visitor management systems to support QR-based parking tickets, digital visitor passes and centralised entry/exit reporting.
The NS-R400-QM is a compact IC-card and QR/1D reader suited to standard indoor access points. The NS-R405-QM adds EM/Mifare card support, PDF417 and full-symbology barcode decoding, a wider temperature range, and multi-OS compatibility, making it the better fit for outdoor gates and more demanding visitor or ticketing deployments.
